Egypt has undergone dramatic political changes since the 2011 revolution and toppling the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak and the democratic election of Mohammad Morsi in June 2012. Morsi aged 61, is the first Islamist elected as head of an Arab state and a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). He won the elections against Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force chief who served briefly as former President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.
